The Best of Him

It goes without saying that each Father’s Day is different from the last.

Just last week, our father was promoted to GREAT granddad (aka great papa) when his eldest grandchild’s wife gave birth to a fourth generation sweet corn family member.

Our dad has always been a hardworking and innovative man, not to mention a conversationalist on most days. Aside from that, most of you have likely noticed his working man hands and his distinctive baby blue eyes.

Here of late, you have witnessed our father taking a back seat and it is likely that he no longer recalls your name. He still enjoys watching the fruits of his labor, his grandkids hard at work, and seeing customers flock to his roadside stand.

At the age of 84 he is more feeble, his work has ceased, yet he is still extremely talkative and has the same large working man hands and those baby blue eyes.

His regression the past few years is the result of dementia. He is quick to forget recent events, but he has the keen ability to recall detailed memories from his earlier life. He may not remember you, he may tell you stories from his past, and he will often repeat himself.

Thank you for not losing patience with our father when you see him at the corn stand. Sadly, the best of him is fading. It is your faces, your smiles, your hugs, and your appreciation for his sweet crop that is more than his family can ask for.

We appreciate your continued love and support for our blue-eyed, previously hardworking, husband, father, papa, and great granddad. Our father has instilled in us a work ethic that will be passed along for generations to come.

I had the pleasure of visiting with great papa for quite a long time sitting in the four wheeler today waiting for the next load of corn. Such an enjoyment for me. I listened intently to his wonderful stories and never tired of looking deep into those beautiful blue eyes and his working hands.
What a treasure you have in him. It was worth the wait and heat just to have a conversation like that. You all have such a legacy in him that is being passed from generation to generation!

    Great Papa was there today,
As I picked up my corn
    My pleasure to visit,
    As his eyes seemed forlorn.

A hard working man his whole life,
Now he can rest, without any strife.

Men his age are dying off,
    With time, Faces wrinkle
    Much of his stories fade
But his blue eyes still twinkle!❤️. 🌽
